Buff-Tailed Bumblebee

Make a Buff-Tailed Bumblebee

Find out about insects from Chris Jarvis, bug expert at the University of Oxford’s Museum of Natural History. Then make this beautiful buzzy buff-tailed bumblebee with Community Artist, Groovy Su.

The bee is made from waste materials you will have around the house. We recommend that you look at the films and gather your materials before you start. Take a look at the list below and you will probably find that you do have most of them. If you don’t have exactly the same things that Su has used – you can substitute with other items that you do have.

And here for the Bee Wing template

As soon as you can, remember to go and see the insect collection in the Natural History Museum in Oxford.

This project was first created for the pupils as St Gregory the Great Catholic School, just off Cowley Road where Carnival is based – but we hope that lots of you will try it too.

Thanks to Groovy Su and Chris Jarvis from the Museum of Natural History.

With huge thanks to the University of Oxford Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division for supporting this project and making it all possible, as well as Carnival at Home’s wonderful sponsors and supporters.

Made by St Greggs

Pupils of St Gregory the Great Primary School got buzzy and made a hive full of bumblebees over the summer term in 2020. Take a look at the gallery of their work.

“The packs were good, with a good range of resources for the children to use … The children really enjoyed the learning activities and it was a great way of settling the children back into school after a long period away. The pupils found the art relaxing and this was a way for the children to nurture their own mental health, providing them with time to work on something by themselves in a quiet and purposeful way.” – Hannah Forder-Ball, Primary Head of School, St Gregory the Great Primary School
